Open Call: Family Days Artist Workshops

BALTIC invites submissions from artists for a series of workshops exploring the ideas in Ad Minoloti: Biosfera Peluche / Biosphere Plush, as a part of BALTIC’s half-term Family Days activities.

Deadline for submissions: Tuesday 14 December, 23.59

During February half-term 2022 BALTIC will host two days of family fun and creativity. Taking place Wednesday 23 & Thursday 24 February 2022, this two-day event includes drop-in workshops, community collaborations and a chance to explore Ad Minoliti: Biosfera Peluche / Biosphere Plush in BALTIC’s Level 4 gallery. The exhibition playfully explores the rich legacy of geometric abstraction in Latin America and alternative universes influenced by feminist and queer thought.

We are seeking expressions of interest for workshops inspired by Ad Minoliti: Biosfera Peluche / Biosphere Plush. The workshops should explore ideas such as: re-imagining landscape and painting traditions from a feminist perspective, alternative universes, science-fiction fantasy and nature.

Each drop-in workshop will last two hours, delivered in either the morning or afternoon.

Proposals must be suitable for children of all ages, environmentally sustainable, consider accessibility, and delivered as drop-in engagements for families to take part in together, for at least 30 minutes.

Consider that workshops will need to be tidied away after each session, so the space can be prepared for subsequent activity. This may impact suitability of materials / activities. Apart from this criteria, we will support you to respond to the brief with openness and flexibility. You will have use of BALTIC’s Level 1 performance space (measuring approximately 13m x 17.5m), as well as a materials budget to realise your ideas.

We’re interested in multi-disciplinary practice and would love to hear from visual artists, musicians and performers proposing workshops around any of the themes in the exhibition, with a particular focus on expanded painting and imagining alternative futures.

Please submit an expression of interest, including:

  • Your suggestion for a drop-in activity for families which explores the ideas in Ad Minoliti: Biosfera Peluche / Biosphere Plush (250 words max. or 2 minute video)
  • Up to six images of your work or a video/audio extract (no longer than two minutes)
  • A materials list
  • Details of any relevant realised projects (500 words max or 4 min video or audio)

Fee and budget:

The artist fee for the project is £340. The fee is calculated based on designing the drop-in workshop and delivering it for two hours on 23 February and 24 February 2022 to large numbers of participants in our level 1 space. We also account for two short project planning meetings within this fee.

We have an additional budget to cover the costs of materials.
