Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art are very excited to be offering up the opportunity for a person with a real passion for food and hospitality to join our team as a Commis Chef in our Events Kitchen and Cafe. 

Baltic is housed in a former flour mill on the historic banks of the River Tyne in Gateshead.  A dramatic landmark building, the gallery hosts an ever-changing calendar of exhibitions and events.

From exhibition previews, weddings and fashion shows to corporate events and supporting our café, Baltic Kitchen. This role provides a dynamic and exciting experience for a dedicated Commis Chef.  

This role assists the day to day running of our Events kitchen & Baltic Kitchen. We are looking for a creative, passionate, and enthusiastic Commis Chef to work with our Kitchen Manager to produce exciting food daily. 

Reporting to the Kitchen Manager you will ensure that together, we are continuing to meet the highest levels of guest care. 

As the Commis Chef, the successful candidate will need the following attributes: 

  • Passion for preparing and cooking quality fresh food.
  • Experience in compliance and quality control.
  • Good understanding of food, health and safety regulations.
  • Experience working in a high-volume kitchen.
  • Hands-on experience with various kitchen equipment
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent punctuality and communication skills.

Main Areas of Responsibility 

  • Day to day production of the event & café menus
  • Following company policies which affect your department.
  • To ensure that the department creates a professional impression to customers and team members.
  • To always follow procedures for food and beverage controls.
  • Maintaining departmental operating standards.
  • Other duties as specified by the Kitchen Manager to reflect the needs of the business.
  • Work together with the team to ensure that the business is the best it can be.
  • Be willing to take on jobs to balance the team workload.
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene.
  • Dealing with deliveries and stock rotation.

This is position is 37 hours per week. Shifts will vary, they will include evenings and weekends reflecting the café/events schedule.

Reports to: Kitchen Manager

Salary: £25,575 per annum

Working hours: Full time role 37 hours per week. Shifts will vary, they will include evenings and weekends reflecting the café/events schedule

Annual leave: 25 days plus bank holidays

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art has exhibited the work of over 500 different international artists and has welcomed over 8 million visitors since opening in 2002. Baltic is housed in the former Rank Hovis Flour Mill built in 1950. Ellis Williams Architects, London oversaw the redevelopment into Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

The internal floor area covers 9979m² including a shop, café, rooftop restaurant, library, archive, viewing terraces alongside four galleries and performance and event spaces.

We are recruiting for a Facilities Technician, with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience to work as part of the Facilities Team within this iconic North East building.

This role will involve ensuring Baltic is maintained and operated to a high standard, including support for events, exhibitions and activities in the building and off-site as required.

The ideal candidate will have practical experience of mechanical and electrical systems and have knowledge of modern building management systems. You will have good communication skills and a real commitment to customer service.

This position involves working on a rota basis including weekends, evenings & bank holidays.

Salary: £25,575

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art are looking to recruit a dynamic new role, sitting at the heart of our creative programme and business planning; perfect for a person with a passion for the arts and excellent organisational skills.

Baltic is the largest contemporary art gallery in the UK, with no collection, we produce and host an ever-changing calendar of exhibitions and events.

The Creative Programme & Partnership Manager, working closely with Baltic’s Director and Senior Creative Team, will play a critical role in the delivery of Baltic’s creative programme and partnerships, as well as ensuring alignment with our Arts Council of England’s (ACE) business planning, evaluation and delivery reporting. 

You will support the Director in successfully delivering and managing Baltic’s creative programmes and strategic creative partnerships, from inception to project closure. You will work closely with key internal stakeholders across Baltic departments to manage the project schedule and risk register effectively. 

The Creative Programme & Partnership Manager will effectively support the Director and Creative Team Leaders in the planning, resourcing and delivery of an integrated programme of activities that align with Baltic’s objectives; ensuring that the Creative Programme team meets its business objectives: artistic, audience, educational and financial, in accordance with the Baltic’s mission, vision and organisational plan.
