Join us with Film Hub North for a new work-in-progress short film event. A chance for North East-based filmmakers to screen unfinished work, test ideas, and get honest reactions in the room.
We’re inviting filmmakers working across narrative short film, documentary and artists’ moving image to share a section of their project (up to 15 minutes). Each screening will be followed by a short discussion with the audience, a chance to hear what’s working, what’s surprising people, and what might help shape the next stage of your film.
Each session, we’ll invite a guest to offer feedback and support about your projects. For this first event we are joined by filmmaker Harry Lawson, whose recent film Stepney Western was supported by Doc Society.
This is a supportive, informal space to share early work, connect with other filmmakers, and get valuable feedback before your film is finished. It is free to submit and free to attend — and free refreshments will be provided.
To submit, please e-mail:
- A short summary of your practice (max 100 words)
- A brief description of the project (max 100 words)
- A clip from your work (max 2 minutes)
- The estimated run time of what you’d like to screen (max 15 minutes)
Baltic stands to denounce racism and discrimination in all its forms and will not accept any works that communicate any form of racism or discrimination.

A shortlist of works will be selected by Adam Pugh (Creative Programme & Partnership Manager, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art) and Jen Bradfield (Talent Producer, BFI Network / Film Hub North)
Harry Lawson
Harry Lawson (b. 1994) is an artist and documentary filmmaker from Sunderland. He lives and works in Newcastle.
Lawson’s approach is deeply collaborative, prioritising long-term engagement with participants. Projects develop slowly, often over several years embedded within a community. Through film, installation and public art, Lawson’s work focuses on how communities are seen and how they see themselves.
Lawson has been supported by BFI Doc Society, Arts Council England, and Wellcome Trust, and featured in publications such as The Guardian, Art Monthly, e-flux, British Journal of Photography, The Face, and The Quietus. Recent screenings and exhibitions include GSFF (Glasgow), NCA (Newcastle), BFMAF (Berwick-upon-Tweed), Chemist Gallery (London), Zumzeig (Barcelona) and Floating (Berlin).
Screen and Tell is presented as part of Baltic’s Artist Development Programme and Baltic Cinema in partnership with Film Hub North, and is all about creating space for experimentation, conversation, and creative development.

Sources expands on our exhibitions
Selected shows films selected by our artists and partners
Quayside Kino is a monthly screening for families and children
News From Home offers films on and from the North East, for the people who live here
