Photo-sensitive
A new lightbox commission by Baltic's Young Producers.
Young Producers are a collective of young artists, producers and leaders who create commissions, events, and workshops at Baltic. Together, they have been exploring the relationship between nature and art and how they complement each other, raising the important question: 'How can we protect the planet in the process of making art?'
Photo-sensitive was made using nature as the source of materials and methods. Over a period of 20 weeks, the collective made prints from turmeric and spinach dyes, cyanotype images, foliage monoprints, and material impression prints. They spent time repeatedly cutting and collaging to create their perfect vision, finding that the satisfyingly bright, organic colours reflected the optimism and hope needed for the future of the environment.
This lightbox is the first instalment of a four-part series of creative outcomes. Young Producers are also producing a publication, a film in two parts and a workshop delivered to others.
With thanks to Baltic's current Young Producers: Cecilia, Chloe C, Chloe W, Grace, Lara, Lucy, Sophie and Zuzanna.
This project is made possible with support of artist Bex Harvey, and based around ecological practice, nature, the environment, and climate change as part of Baltic's Birds, Bees, Bikes and Trees project, generously funded by National Lottery Community Fund.
