Photographic Exhibition Practice: Dissemination

Wed 12 Feb 2025 | 18:00-20:00
Duration: 2 hours

In this workshop artists will be invited to delve into their exhibition practice, considering questions such as: why exhibit your artwork? What role does it play in relation to your practice? Who is your audience and how do you reach them?

We will examine the work of feminist, activist, and social documentary photographer Franki Raffles, drawing upon work included in the retrospective exhibition Photography, Activism, Campaign Works. We will identify the methodologies utilised by Raffles to disseminate their work and reflect upon the relationship between her intentions for the artwork and their context when displayed.

Participants will be invited to consider the role exhibiting to the public plays in relation to a chosen artwork/project or practice more broadly. We will work both collectively and collaboratively to explore display methods and contexts, undertaking activities and exercises that seek to align our intentions with actions. Participants will leave the session with an exhibition proposal and strategies to action it.

Photographic Exhibition Histories: Documentation

Wed 19 Feb 2025 | 18:00-20:00
Duration: 2 hours

In this workshop artists will be invited to delve into their exhibition practice, considering questions such as: Why exhibit your artwork? What role does it play in relation to your practice? Who is your audience and how do you reach them?

We will examine the work of feminist, activist, and social documentary photographer Franki Raffles, drawing upon work included in the retrospective exhibition, Photography, Activism, Campaign Works. Focusing on the archival material contextualising Raffles’ work, we will explore the relationship between the document and the artwork.

Considering exhibition documentation as a mode of (re)performance, participants will be invited to work with documentation of an artwork, project, or exhibition, and through a series of creative exercises move towards developing documentation strategies that align with their practice and work.
