Nowruz (Persian New Year)
23 March 2024 | 12-3pm | Free drop-in
Join us in Front Room for Nowruz (also known as Persian New Year) to celebrate the beginning of Spring and new life.
Over the years, we’ve enjoyed learning about the different cultural traditions and celebrations enjoyed by our neighbours, including Nowruz – a festival which marks the beginning of spring. This year we’re working closely with our community collaborators Afrooz Bayat and Zarifeh Peygar, to host Nowruz here at Baltic.
We invite you to welcome the longer days and explore the connection between humans and nature, with food, music, and art workshops in our Front Room. Add a song to our spring-themed community playlist, and a paper flower to our display, while also learning about the Nowruz tradition such as haft-sin: the custom of setting a table with seven items beginning with the letter ‘s’. This can include sabzeh (sprouted lentil or wheat), which symbolises rebirth; seer (garlic) for good health; serekh (vinegar) for patience; seeb (apple) for beauty. There will be music (often impromptu dancing!), activities for children, and light refreshments.
To mark the third year working with community collaborators Afrooz Bayat and Zarifeh Peygar to host Nowruz here at Baltic, we invited them to also create a film. You can watch it here.
