BALTIC’s Sensory Room is open and ready to welcome you back safely. We've put changes in place so that you can enjoy a safe visit in a relaxed environment.
BALTIC's Sensory Room is a quiet space to play and explore with sensory toys, projections and lights. You’ll find two sets of fibre optics, a bubble tube, a light table with coloured shapes, projector, two large light-up orbs and cubes, a sofa, two large soft shapes and wipe-able matting in our Sensory Space.
Before visiting we are asking all visitors to book a free group ticket for up to 6 people for an allocated morning or afternoon timeslot; 10.30-12.00, 13.00-14.30 or 16.00-17.30. This will help us manage the number of people visiting and ensure that you and your family can experience the Sensory Room safely.
The Sensory Room will be exclusively yours for up to 90 minutes and will be cleaned between each booking. Each booking has a maximum of 6 attendees.
If you wish to visit the galleries before or after your Sensory Room timeslot, you will need to book a free ticket here.
On your visit to the Sensory Room, you’ll be able to use our Learning Lounge toilets including our toddler toilets and accessible toilets with WispaLite hoists 200kg, closomat wash and dry systems and shower.
We are asking all visitors to wear a face covering when visiting BALTIC. Face coverings are mandatory for all visitors except those with health and breathing issues, and children under the age of 11, in line with government guidelines.
What is the Sensory Room and who is it for?
BALTIC’s Sensory Room is 30m² and mainly features sensory lighting including fibre optics, mirrors, a light-up panel, light table, sensory orbs, colour projections and a bubble tube. It encourages visual stimulation, touch engagement and communication skills in a comfortable and calm way. The Sensory Room is for anyone who feels they, or someone they care for, might benefit from being in this environment.
I know I can book up to 6 people; do children count as part of that 6?
Yes, please book a group ticket for up to 6 people, including adults, children and babes in arms. Please note; if more than 6 people attend this booking you will be turned away. Thank you for your cooperation.
If I’m staying in the Sensory Room, do I still need to wear a mask?
Definitely. We are asking all visitors to wear a face covering when visiting BALTIC. Face coverings are mandatory for all visitors except those with health and breathing issues, and children under the age of 11, in line with government guidelines. If you accidentally arrive without one, we have disposable masks to give you. When worn correctly, masks go over your mouth AND nose.
Whilst masks are mandatory in public buildings like BALTIC, not everyone can wear one. There are a number of reasons why people are unable to wear masks and they aren’t all visible. We recognise and support this and ask you to do the same.
I want to visit the rest of BALTIC too. Is that included in this booking too?
No. We’d love you to visit the rest of BALTIC and ask that you book a separate time slot to see the galleries here. This helps us control the total number of visitors at any one time and ensure that everyone’s visits are as safe and comfortable as possible.
If your gallery booking time runs consecutively to your Sensory Space booking you don’t need to be re-checked in and can proceed with your visit from Level 2. Please be aware a member of our Crew team might query your onward booking with you; please know that they’re there to help.
However, you might like to book your Sensory Room and gallery visit times with a gap so you can take advantage of our café or bring your own packed lunch and relax in our picnic area BALTIC Front Room; make a day of it.
I want to use the Learning Lounge too, can I?
No, not with this booking. If you’d like to use the Learning Lounge then we ask that you book a separate time slot here. This helps us control the total number of visitors at any one time and ensure that everyone’s visits are as safe and comfortable as possible.
Please be aware that you cannot book to attend the Sensory Room and Learning Lounge at the same time. We want to reduce unnecessary movement as much as possible, and moving frequently between the Sensory Space and Learning Lounge Zone makes this more challenging. Your cooperation is hugely appreciated.
If you are no longer able to attend your booked session, please let us know so we can offer this space to someone else. You can email us on firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0191 261 3830. Due to the popularity of these sessions, if you are more than 30 minutes late we may offer the booking to someone else.
