LOUD! The Koestler Exhibition for the North East

Friday 5 February - Saturday 12 March 2016

LOUD! was an exhibition of artwork from prisons, secure hospitals, secure children’s homes, and probation services in the North East of England.

The exhibition featured an extensive range of artwork including painting, drawing, sculpture, and creative writing from entries to the 2015 Koestler Awards – a charitable scheme which has been rewarding artistic achievement in the criminal justice and secure services for over 50 years. The exhibition was shown across BALTIC and The Gallery at Gateshead Central Library.

This thought provoking collection was selected and curated by young people from the Gateshead Behaviour Support Service with BALTIC artist Paul Merrick. The curators chose artworks that explore themes of escapism, freedom, conflict and home.

A new Koestler Trust app was developed exclusively for this exhibition. Using beacon technology, it offered visitors an insight into the making of the exhibition, including young curators’ commentaries, behind the scenes videos and access to all the writing displayed in the exhibition. Koestler Trust is a free app available in the App Store and Google Play store.

Some works were for sale, with proceeds going to the artist, the Koestler Trust and Victim Support.

The exhibition continued at The Gallery, Gateshead Central Library.
