‘I am a wordsmith by trade, I am a storyteller'

Marián Hernández Villada

FRAGMENTS OF IDENTITY presented a collection of imagery firmly rooted in the classical history of art and its fascination with the human body. Through a series of nude photographs, Hernández Villada explored universal feelings of loss, love, regret, pain, frustration and joy un-obscured by clothes, masks, theatricality or artifice.

Her work explores how being part of a couple can alter personal identity; how two characters can melt, fuse and adapt to each other to become something different, something beyond and bigger than the individual.

FRAGMENTS OF IDENTITY is exhibited as part of The Artist Teacher Award; an annual prize awarded to a graduate of the MA Fine Art and Education, delivered by Northumbria University in partnership with BALTIC. This year’s winner, selected by BALTIC Curator of Exhibitions and Research, Alessandro Vincentelli, is Marián Hernández Villada, Artist Teacher at St Joseph’s Catholic Academy, Hebburn.

Marián Hernández Villada would like to thank Lothar Schmid.
