Birds, Bees, Bikes & Trees Launch Day

Sunday 2 June 2024 | 11am - 4pm

Join us to celebrate the launch of Birds, Bees, Bikes & Trees, a three-year long project at Baltic, in partnership with North East Young Dads & Lads and Newcastle University.

To celebrate the launch of our Birds, Bees, Bikes, and Trees project, Baltic will sprawl with free drop in activities to get creative and learn more about nature and climate. 

The project is generously funded by the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund.

Meet the Beekeepers and Honey Tasting

11am - 4pm |  Level 1
Join the beekeepers from North East Young Dads & Lads to see if you can taste the difference between Tyneside honey and supermarket brands. Pop into our cinema to watch Honey on the Tyne, and at 2.30pm watch a livestream of the beekeepers inspect the Baltic Beehives on our roof.

Build a Beehive

11am - 4pm | Level 1
Join North East Young Dads and Lads to build a home for our rooftop honeybees. Learn how to construct a frame for the hive and find out more about the exact conditions bees need to thrive. 

Meet a Climate Expert 

11am, 1pm, 3pm | Front Room
Want to learn more about our environment? Hear from and chat to nature and climate experts from Newcastle University to learn about possible futures, insects and more, and find out what role you can play in preserving the planet. Make sure to ask about our Climate Club!

Kittiwake Learning 

11am - 4pm |  Level 5
Did you know Baltic is home to the furthest inland colony of Kittiwakes in the world? Discover little-known facts about our popular residents, watch the live Kittiwake Cam, and keep an eye out for any flying by!

Climate Club Sign-Up

11am - 4pm |  Front Room
Connect with like-minded local people who care about the environment at our new climate club. Meeting monthly, this club will take action to support nature and find real steps we can take as a community to help reduce the impact of climate change. 

Bikes on the Square

11am - 4pm | Baltic Square
Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a bike novice, join North East Young Dads & Lads on Baltic Square for drop-in bike maintenance and top bike lock tips. Test your skills on two wheels with a small selection of bikes for toddlers, children and adults to try out - helmets provided! 

Plant for Pollinators

12pm - 3.30pm | Baltic Square
Join our gardener Vicki and help us fill our outdoor planters with nectar-rich plants for the Baltic rooftop honeybees and wild pollinators. You can even plant a seed of your own to take home!

Kittiwake Tour 

1.30pm | Hello desk,  Ground floor
Join a lovely member of Baltic Crew for a tour of our level 4 viewing terrace and the chance to see the Kittiwakes up close. 

Meet & Make 

2pm - 4pm | Learning Lounge
Join our usual artist-led Sunday afternoon workshop, this week with a Birds, Bees, Bikes & Trees twist!
