Episode 1: The Mediated Body

Can we see illness not as an individual experience but as something shared, part of our daily life?

Right now, caring for our bodies is essential. Care can be a radical act, a form of resistance and a way of creating community.

In this episode listen to writer, musician and artist Johanna Hedva read from their new book, Minerva the Miscarriage of the Brain, that delves into mysticism, madness, motherhood and magic.

Curator Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz and writer, artist and community organiser Ted Kerr discuss Kerr’s work as part of the collective What Would an HIV Doula do, the ongoing AIDS crisis, and how caring for our own bodies is part of caring for each other.

Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz is Exhibitions Curator at Wellcome Collection and Guest Editor of the book Documents of Contemporary Art: HEALTH (Co-published by The MIT Press / Whitechapel Gallery, September 2020). Her exhibitions include ‘This is a Voice’ (2016), ‘Bedlam’ (co-curated with Mike Jay, 2017), ‘Ayurvedic Man’ and ‘Jo Spence and Oreet Ashery: Misbehaving Bodies’ (co-curated with George Vasey, 2019–20). She has written for Afterall, Art Agenda, Concreta, Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, MARG and Mousse Publishing.

Theodore Kerr is a Canadian born Brooklyn based writer, organizer, and artist whose work focuses on HIV/AIDS, community, and culture. He is a founding member of the collective, What Would an HIV Doula Do?

Johanna Hedva (they/them) is a Korean-American writer, artist, musician, and astrologer, who was raised in Los Angeles by a family of witches, and now lives in LA and Berlin. Hedva is the author of Minerva the Miscarriage of the Brain, a collection of poems, performances, and essays, and the novel On Hell. Their album The Sun and the Moon was released in 2019, and in January 2021, they will release the LP, Black Moon Lilith in Pisces in the 4th House, a doom-metal guitar and voice performance influenced by Korean shamanist ritual. Their work has been shown in Berlin at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Klosterruine, and Institute of Cultural Inquiry, The Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, Performance Space New York, the LA Architecture and Design Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art on the Moon. Their writing has appeared in Triple Canopy, frieze, Lithub, The White Review, and is anthologized in Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art.

Helen Collard is an artist interested in the connections between the mind and body, sound and technology. Collard’s work is presented through various forms including performance, interactive installations, film and sound works. Blending her knowledge and teaching of yoga Collard develops, training systems and performances. These embodied techniques are then expanded through her creative experiments with technology, biofeedback and sound. Her work is used to explore consciousness, interdependence and listening environments. Collard's PhD research titled Finding Prana: Digital and Performative Experiments in Search of a Technology of the Self explores the physical, mental and philosophical dimensions of breath through a sonic arts practice. She is a member of the improvisation performance group Ocells al Cap (Birds in the Head).
