Space Octave is a polyphonic playground- an interactive play experience where families work together to create a musical soundscape.
Eight colour floor pads produce harmonic notes that can then be modulated by a series of interactive, tactile units positioned around the space. Playful interaction with these elements will effect the sound by changing parameters like pitch, reverb and delay. The installation is designed to be intuitive with no technical knowledge required to enjoy.
Space Octave has been conceived by Extraviolet, a London based design studio made up of artists and filmmaker Jack Wates and Alex Mead and engineer Sami Sabik. Space Octave was chosen as part of the MAPS Festival Open Call commission process in partnership with Chalk and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. The commission is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
