BALTIC 20th Birthday Weekend

We're turning 20! Since July 2002 we've welcomed 8.8 million visitors and presented hundreds of exhibitions, artists and events. Join us Sat 16 & Sun 17 July for a weekend of special events to celebrate our 20th Birthday.

BALTIC's twice yearly Family Days will also be joining the celebration with activities taking inspiration from BALTIC's building history as a working flour mill.

Level 5:

  • Experience stunning views from our Viewing Box.

  • Experience Mounira al Solh: A day is as long as a year, and enjoy relaxed, family friendly story sessions.

  • On Saturday 16 July 11-4pm join artist Sue Loughlin in a creative workshop exploring food. It’s 2050, it’s your birthday and your kitchen is equipped with a food printing device. You download your favourite recipes and watch as your personalised party tea materialises on your plate... What does it look like?

  • On Saturday 16 July 12-4pm, explore your feelings, memories and connections to food in a drop-in zine workshop with designer and artist Holly Eliza Temple. Using archival material and vintage recipe books, you can collage, draw and bind your own personal zine about what food means to you, and be a part of a collaborative outcome to be archived at BALTIC.

  • Explore our Sensory Room, a space with sensory toys, projections and lights. Have fun in Learning Lounge, with games, toys, books and creative activities.

Level 1:

  • Undutiful Spirit – a collaboration between artists Rosie Morris and Harriet Sutcliffe and curator Gayle Meikle, mark the close of their six-month long BALTIC Archive residency with some paper pulping 12-4pm.

  • Drop into our cinema and re-discover some BALTIC memories from the last 20 years.

Ground Floor:

  • Get active, play and imagine in the interactive exhibition, Albert Potrony: equal play.

  • Enjoy a free hot drink or squash, with snacks in Front Room on the Ground Floor.

  • A Limited Edition Gold version of the classic BALTIC Tote bag and a limited edition Tatty Devine Angel of the North gold necklace will both be available exclusively at BALTIC Shop on the Ground Floor.

Throughout the building:

  • Join a Wonder & Wander tour at 10.30am where you and your toddler can discover our current exhibitions through sensory exploration using materials, movement and sound.

  • TOTALLER will use space within the building to summon A BUN DANCE. Over the course of the weekend experience a range of interactive performances and audio visual provocations, including meditations and making sessions, around themes of friendship, generosity and abundance. TOTALLER is an assemblage of artists based around the north of England, who since 2014 have worked with over 30 artists in settings that include galleries, garages and archaeological sites. Their practice is collective and experimental, built around friendship as a creative force.

Outside:

  • Buy affordable art from over 50 artists including painters, ceramicists print makers, zine makers and sculptors in BALTIC's first Art Car Boot Fair (open 11am-5pm) in Baltic's Car Park. Food and drink stalls will be open to buy refreshments from Acropolis, Little Bao Bar, Palominos Ice Cream and North Shore Coffee. Live DJ sets from Slack’s Radio will complete the alfresco experience.

  • Visit the mobile exhibition What's for Tea? on its last stop and on Sunday 17 July at 2.30pm join artist Julia Heslop for a talk and pancakes.

  • Explore the NewcastleGateshead Quayside and local history as BALTIC Crew take you on a relaxed Quayside Tour.

  • Borrow a hula hoop from our Front Room and have a spin and a twirl on Baltic Square.

After hours:

  • As the suns sets on the first day of the 20th Birthday Weekend, on Saturday 16 July a special live stream DJ set will broadcast live online at 9pm from Baltic’s level 4 viewing terrace. Partnering with OCOL TV, the broadcast will combine a live DJ performance from RCML with cinematic camera and drone shots of Baltic and the stunning Newcastle Gateshead quayside. Online visitors can tune in from Baltic’s website or facebook.com/balticgateshead from wherever you are on the evening to toast us a Happy 20th Birthday.


Useful tips for your visit:

We recommend travelling by public transport if you are able to, as our main car park will be closed.

• Newcastle Central Station or Gateshead Metro Interchange are the closest Metro stops to BALTIC. Find out about Nexus' Take the Kids for Free promise.

• Gateshead Bus Interchange or Newcastle Central Station are the closest bus stations. The Voltra 53 & Voltra 54 buses run every 12 minutes during the day and directly serve BALTIC. They start from both Gateshead Interchange and Newcastle Central Station. You can find the timetables here: Service 54 Service 53

• BALTIC's main car park will be closed, please use alternative car parks. Quarryfield Road Car Park is just up the bank from BALTIC, opposite Gateshead College. If using Sage Gateshead car park, the usual steps down to BALTIC are not available as this area is under development.

• BALTIC is accessible by bike via South Shore Road and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. There are bike racks located on Baltic Square, near BALTIC's main entrance. The bike racks are maintained by Gateshead Council and free to use.


Access: BALTIC has step-free access. There is a Buggy Park available however please be prepared there will be limited space. Find out more about BALTIC’s accessibility here.

Baby Change & Toilets: There are toilets and baby change facilities throughout the building, with free nappies and wipes available on request, just ask a member of BALTIC Crew.

BALTIC Front Room: You can bring your own packed lunch and eat it our Front Room, located on the Ground Floor. You can enjoy free hot drinks, squash and snacks here too, donations welcome.

Feeding: BALTIC is breast and bottle feeding friendly, you can feed your baby wherever you like on your visit.

Lockers: Lockers are available to use on the Ground Floor to store items during your visit. Lockers require a non-refundable £1 coin to operate.
