"I am chaos. I am the substance from which your artists and scientists build rhythms. I am the spirit with which your children and clowns laugh in happy anarchy. I am chaos. I am alive, and I tell you that you are free", the goddess Eris (Hill and Thornley 1963)
The ERiS Project has been developed to launch the new experimental studio at BALTIC 39. There are three initial sessions in May, June and July. The first is themed around architectural experimentation, the second around the experimental art of refuge and exile and the third around dance and body-experiment. Each session has a range of talks and performances and is open to and inclusive of all. The ambition for these ERiS sessions is threefold:
1.To create an experimental space within the session itself; 2.To cultivate new audiences, ways of interaction and the building of an experimental culture; 3.To have fun, create a vibe and challenge social and cultural power from the standpoint of the commons.
The project has been developed by Martyn Hudson, Alan Lynn and Rob Tickell with support from Andrea Phillips and BxNU Institute
Thursday 4 July 2019 16.00-18.00: If I can't dance I don't want your revolution!
We introduce the last session by thinking about a revolution which serves art rather than art serving a revolution. Bringing together choreographers, thinkers and artists we look towards creating a new 'anarchos' in our space: a multitude of contestations, antagonisms and creativities. The voices of our speakers will be re-configured in the space creating a maelstrom co-produced by the audience. This new murmuration challenges political art to re-invent itself.
