BxNU Experimental Studio | BALTIC 39

An afternoon of conversation about comics, activism and gender with makers, publishers and scholars.

Comics are being employed to address a wide range of subjects, such as ecological issues, the treatment of refugees, and gender and ethnic identity. This event explores the growing diversity of those involved with comics in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and their equally diverse work, whether creating, publishing, editing or analysing the medium. The afternoon discussions will address ongoing debates and issues around creating comics in physical or digital form.

Speakers: Corinne Pearlman (Myriad Editions), Kate Charlesworth, Sara Qaed, Fionnuala Doran, Olivia Hicks, Tara McInerney, Professor Andrea Phillips, Dr Mel Gibson, Dr Rosie White

The symposium will be followed by the preview and launch event for a new exhibition of activist comics at Baltic 39, in the heart of Newcastle. Book early to avoid disappointment.

The Comics, Activism and Gender Symposium is supported by BxNU and the Institute of Humanities at Northumbria University, working with Dr Mel Gibson and the Gendered Subjects Research Group.
