A Visual Story: Larry Achiampong, Wayfinder

This exhibition is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm. You can drop-in for free anytime during our opening hours.

  • This exhibition is across two floors in both our Level 2 and Level 3 gallery spaces.
  • The Level 2 space is a Gaming Room, and Level 3 contains film and installation

Level 2 Gaming Room

  • As you approach this exhibition, you will encounter a dark green wall with the title of this exhibition and below it dates of the exhibition.
  • There is a porch over the doorway, and three mannequin figures on it, hanging from the ceiling.
  • It is okay to travel through the doorway.
  • Inside the walls are bright yellow.
  • To the right is some text explaining the exhibition.
  • There are large colourful flags hanging from the ceiling.

  • This Gaming Room shows many of the video games that have influenced the artist's artwork.
  • This room has a variety of TVs, screens and includes playable consoles.
  • Each game has a labelled PEGI (Pan European Game Information) age recommendation.
  • Some of the games in this space are rated PEGI 12 and over. Responsibility lies with guardians to look after children in their care when visiting this space and no children under the age of 12 years should be left without their own adult’s supervision.
  • The consoles include GameCube, SNES, Nintendo 64, Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
  • The games explore the theme of journeying, examples include Ico, Journey, Inside, Legend of Zelda and Ori and the Blind Forest.
  • There are beanbags, cushions and seating in this area.
  • This space also contains a range of books.
  • There will be a Baltic Crew member in the gallery, they are there to help and assist you with any questions.
  • You can travel around this space in any direction.
  • Take as long as you want in this exhibition, there is no time limit.
  • Once you are ready to leave this gallery, head back and exit the same way you entered.

Level 3 Wayfinder

  • As you approach this exhibition, you will encounter a large yellow wall with the title of this exhibition 'Larry Achiampong, Wayfinder' and below it dates of the exhibition.
  • To the left wall is a large illustration of a figure wearing an astronaut outfit and holding a flag. 
  • There will be a Baltic Crew member in the gallery, they are there to help and assist you with any questions.

  • As you enter the exhibition, to the right there will be a dark  wall with a large screen displaying a film. There are headphones to listen to the audio.
  • To the left is a larger room with red walls, and descriptive text about the exhibition on the wall. 
  • There are two screens playing films, and flags hanging from the ceiling. Take care when travelling around these.
  • There are a number of mannequins wearing green clothing, similar to combat or space travel items.

  • As you continue to travel clockwise through the space, there is a doorway with areas of low lighting.
  • In this room there is a film playing, and cushions on the floor. It is okay to take a seat.

  • As you travel to the back of the exhibition, there are a number of blackboards with repeated chalk phrases written on them. 
  • There is an artwork called Glyth collages.
  • In this collection of work, the faces of each Black person in the artist’s family photos have been replaced with cubist like circles and red lips.
  • The artist references his experiences of racism growing up in East London, the Robertson’s ‘Golliwog’ mascot still in circulation until 2002, and the Guy Fawkes mask from Alan Moore’s comic V For Vendetta.
  • Towards the back of this section, there is an installation with film, and other items including chairs, plants and hoovers. 
  • As you continue, there is a carpeted walkway with low light levels, please take care and allow time to adjust to this lighting. 
  • On the wall before you enter is some text indicating at which chapter you may be joining the film. 
  • Within this room the feature length film Wayfinder is playing. 
  • There are benches and cushions here. Feel free to take a seat. 
  • Take as long as you want in this exhibition, there is no time limit.
  • Once you are ready to leave this gallery, head back and exit the same way you entered.
