A Visual Story: Land of Friends

This exhibition is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm. You can drop-in for free anytime during our opening hours.

Land of Friends Entrance
  • You can take the stairs or the lift to this exhibition.
  • As you approach this exhibition on the Fourth Floor, you will encounter a large wall text with the title of this exhibition Carolina CaycedoLand of Friends.
  • This exhibition explores environmental justicemovementdisplacementconnectionlanguage and exchange.
  • On the left hand side entrance you will see a portrait screen displaying exhibition access information. Please feel free to read.
  • As you move further round the corner you will find the exhibition guides. Please feel free to take one and read. The exhibition guides are also available in large print.
  • You can enter this exhibition from the left and right hand entrances.
  • There will be a BALTIC Crew member in the gallery, you might see them at the back of the gallery, they are there to help and assist you with any questions.
  • Look out for markings on the floor or wire barriers around some artworks. This is to protect the artwork.
Interior of Land of Friends
  • We advise turning left and travelling around the exhibition clockwise. But you can travel in any direction around the exhibition.
  • From the entrance you will see a variety of different artworkstextile banners and video installation pieces. Some are larger than others, and will be taller than you.
  • Above you will see large circular fishing net sculptures hanging overhead.
  • To the left, you will see cotton and silk fabric wall hangings travelling the length of the gallery. Please do not touch the artworks.
  • Take care when moving around this space. Be aware of items hanging and leaning.
  • Further into the gallery you will notice a long table with a book folded out across it. Please do not touch the artworks.

  • When you move further into the gallery you will see this artwork

  • To the left of this artwork there is a video installation piece. This space will be darker.
  • Please feel free to sit on the benches.
  • The sound piece might be loud. There are also troughs of water on the floor. You might see the video reflected in the water. Please do not touch the water.
  • The video pieces are 26 minutes 6 seconds long.
  • You do not have to watch the entire film. You can exit at any time.

  • Once you have exited this space you will notice coloured large drawings. Please do not touch the artworks.

  • At the rear of the gallery you will see a projection piece with sound. The lighting might be bright and the projected visuals will be changing. Please feel free to roam around this section of space.
  • The video is 4 minutes 32 seconds long.
  • You do not have to watch the entire film. You can exit at any time.
Three textile banner artworks
  • As you move further clockwise round the gallery you will notice three textile banner artworks.

  • Along from this you will notice a television with a video playing. Please feel free to watch the film.
  • The film is 20 minutes 50 seconds long.
  • You do not have to watch the entire film.

  • You will then encounter a tent structure made from identifiable items of clothing and other textiles. There are two openings into the tent, you can enter from either one.

 

  • Inside the tent, the lighting might be dimmed.
  • There are bean bags inside the tent. There is a television screen too. Please feel free to sit on the bean bags and watch the film.
  • The film is 42 minutes long.
  • You do not have to watch the entire film, and can exit at any time.
  • Once you are ready to leave the gallery you can leave out the doorway you came in.
