Open call for BALTIC Bothy Residency 2021

BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead is supporting an emerging artist based in the North East of England (County Durham, Northumberland, Teesside or Tyne and Wear) to undertake a week’s residency at Sweeney’s Bothy on the Isle of Eigg, in partnership with the Bothy Project.

The residency will take place from 5-12 March 2021*

Deadline for submissions: Friday 27 November 2020, 23.59

The BALTIC Bothy Residency will provide the opportunity for an artist to work in a unique environment and have time and space to research, think, and develop their practice in the inspiring landscape of the Inner Hebridean Islands.

The residency is supported with a £500 artist's fee, a travel bursary and the Bothy accommodation, a live/work space, for seven days.

Bothy Project is a growing network of small-scale, off-grid art residency spaces in distinct and diverse locations around Scotland and beyond. Bothy Project invites artists and researchers to journey and explore the history, landscape and people in the areas surrounding the bothies. Sweeney’s Bothy is located on the Isle of Eigg, it was designed by architect Iain MacLeod and artist Bobby Niven in collaboration with artist Alec Finlay as part of Creative Scotland’s Year of Natural Scotland 2013. The residency will enable the selected artist to develop their practice through an immersive, dedicated period of work in a unique, off-grid residency cabin.

Following their residency, participants are invited to share their research with the wider public by submitting a blog entry on the Bothy Project website.

Artists who have been awarded the residency include Katie Cuddon (2017), Julia Heslop (2018), and Grace Denton (2019).
