Are you and your children bored of soft play centres and identikit playgrounds? Looking for something creative where you can do your own thing? Experience PlayShapes at BALTIC, commissioned as part of the MAPS Festival programme.

PlayShapes is an interactive experience that allows children to create their own sculptures, installations or playscapes, imagined by artist Pippa Hale. PlayShapes abandons the rigid formats and primary colours of children’s play areas, and allows children space to get creative and do their own thing.

Using colourful cubes, families are invited to make dens, seats and obstacle courses, where they can climb, slide, crawl, balance, jump or roll! But be warned, towards the end of each session, children and grown-ups must work together to create a game of giant 3D Tetris.

PlayShapes was commissioned for MAPS Festival by Chalk and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
