Art Lab Creative Food Packages

BALTIC has been continuing its work in connecting with local communities through Art Lab, an ongoing holiday programme offering artist-led activities and meals throughout the school holidays. In December 2020, BALTIC worked together with local food suppliers and artist Isabella Carreras to create and distribute fun, tasty and creative packages to families and individuals across Birtley, Gateshead.

More than 100 creative food packages, containing ingredients, recipe cards, printed artist-designed activities and art materials, were distributed to BALTIC’s local communities over the Christmas holidays. Additionally, eight online artist-led workshops were delivered over Zoom, with internet data being made available for anyone without access. BALTIC artist Isabella Carreras designed and delivered the printed activities along with online workshops, easing the strain of boredom and isolation experienced by children during COVID-19 restrictions.

Family health and wellbeing is an important, ongoing part of Art Lab. The packages included nutritious, high quality fruit and vegetables, long-life food and store cupboard essentials alongside fun recipe ideas to keep creative minds and bodies glowing and flowing. These food packages allowed families time and space to create, make, share and eat nutritious and delicious food together.

Passion 4 Fruits, Low Fell provided Class 1 fruit and vegetables, Mr Bakers of Birtley contributed hand baked biscuits and all other foods stuffs were sourced with the help of the Community Champion at Morrisons Birtley. All three local suppliers gave kind and generous discounts to support Art Lab.

December Art Lab was made possible through the generous support of Commercial Maintenance Services (CMS).

The John Thaw Foundation, Shears Foundation and Wellsley Trust have supported BALTIC to deliver Art Lab in February, Easter, June, Summer and October school holidays between February 2020 and April 2021.
