MAPS Festival: PlayShapes

15-17 Feb

15-17 Feb £6 per session

Join us at BALTIC to be immersed in an original, innovative piece of interactive artwork as part of the MAPS Festival including a whole host of cutting edge music, art and play experiences for families of children under eight.

Are you and your kids bored of soft play centres and identikit playgrounds? Looking for something creative where you can do your own thing? Then come and try PlayShapes as part of MAPS Festival.

Conceived by artist Pippa Hale as an antidote to the rigid formats and primary colours of children’s play areas, PlayShapes allow children to create their own sculptures, installations or playscapes.

Inside the gallery you’ll find a number of 1m3 coloured cubes that break down into polygons, rectangular prisms, cylinders and steps that can be reconfigured into limitless combinations to make dens, seats and obstacle courses on which to climb, site, crawl, balance, jump or roll.

But be warned! Towards the end of each session, kids and grown-ups must work together to reassemble the cubes in a game of giant 3D Tetris.

PlayShapes will run throughout MAPS Festival:
Fri 15 Feb - Limited sessions remaining

The session times across all three days are:
Session 1 - 10.15 – 11.00
Session 2 - 11.30 – 12.15
Session 3 - 13.00 – 13.45
Session 4 - 14.15 – 15.00
Session 5 - 15.30 – 16.15
Session 6 - 16.45 – 17.30

The 10.15 session on Friday 15 February is a special access session; a quieter, more relaxed opportunity to visit PlayShapes. Suitable for those on the autistic spectrum and their families, but open to anyone who feels they might benefit.

PlayShapes are inspired by the work of Isamu Noguchi and Froebel’s Gifts as a way of introducing young children to experiment with colour and three dimensional space before they are able to comprehend them intellectually. Fun, artistic and educational.

PlayShapes was commissioned by Chalk and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts and supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
