A twelve-week programme of activities accompanies Lubaina Himid: Our Kisses are Petals. The programme celebrates the raising of the flag which sits on top of BALTIC's roof, taking place on each of the Sundays throughout the Great Exhibition of the North. Each week there will be activity at 11.00 to coincide with the raising of Lubaina Himid’s flag.
5 August, Ladies of Midnight Blue – Hannabiell
Head to the Baltic Square at 10.45 for a Community Drum Circle led by Ladies of Midnight Blue, which will coincide with the raising of the flag on BALTIC’s roof. Bring your own drum or percussion instruments to join the drumming. From 13.30, Ladies of Midnight Blue will perform in BALTIC’s Ground Floor gallery. Ladies of Midnight Blue is an Afro-Latin percussion & brass duet comprised of Hannabiell Sanders (Bass Trombone, African & Latin Percussion and Composer) and Yilis del Carmen Suriel (African & Latin Percussion). They create a powerful and upbeat fusion which reaches deeply into trance drum rhythms to create a melodic sound that inspires dancing and audience participation.
12 August, Poetry Take Over Day
You’re invited to explore a poem that has been a friend to you in conversation with members of The Poetry Exchange team. The Poetry Exchange explores the idea of poems as friends. Through conversations, events and a podcast, the team gather and share connections between people and poems. In return you’ll receive a gift: a unique recording of a chosen poem, inspired by conversation and your thoughts and feelings about the poem. 19 August, Gala Big Band
To mark the Raising of the Flag members from The Gala Big band will perform a ‘call and response’ between Baltic Square and BALTIC’s viewing platform, which will culminate in a full performance in Baltic Square. In addition, band leader Paul Edis will premiere a new work in response to Lubaina Himid’s Our Kisses are Petals. This performance will take place in the Ground Floor gallery (time TBC).
26 August, Beat This
Head to Baltic Square for a performance by Beat This, a loud percussion group who believe that people with additional needs should be seen and heard. Beat This was born through a strong creative friendship with Brazilian art activists Afro Reggae who use culture as their tool to bring about change in communities. Beat This perform using percussion instruments from all around the world. The group are supported by the Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company.
2 September, Kissed
Blowing musical retro kisses in your direction, Kissed promise the audiences on Baltic Square a crowd pleasing, melodic, unique interpretations of Pop Classics. The band is made up of Nicky Rushton, Sarah Van Jellie, Charlie Hardwick, Zoe Lambert and Nathalie Stern.
9 September, North Tyneside Steel Band
North Tyneside Steel band will perform on Baltic Square as the flag on top of BALTIC is raised. As the North East’s top steel band, the band play a wide variety of music ranging from traditional Caribbean, to pop, classical, jazz and Latin. Recent performances include: The Wickerman Festival, Cudrefin International Steelband Festival, Royal Albert Hall Schools Proms, National Festival of Music for Youth and BBC Young Folk Musician of the Year.
